Can You Have Plantation Shutters Across Patio or Bifold Doors?

Written by: | Posted on: | Category:

If you have a large set of glazed doors, one of the first questions is often:

What can I put across them without losing all that lovely natural light?

This recent Shutters For You installation is a great example of why plantation shutters are worth considering.

The shutters extend neatly across the entire glazed opening, creating a clean, fitted finish while still allowing plenty of daylight into the room.

And, importantly, they give the homeowners much more control over privacy, glare and sunlight throughout the day.

Shutters aren't just for ordinary windows

Plantation shutters are often associated with traditional windows and bay windows, but made-to-measure shutters can also provide a very effective solution for much larger openings.

That can include:

Patio doors French doors Large picture windows Wide glazed openings Some bifold door configurations https://www.shuttersforyou.co.uk/Shutter%20Styles/

The key words are made to measure.

A large opening needs to be properly assessed so that the shutter layout works with the glazing, door handles and the way the doors themselves operate.

A real Shutters For You installation

Take a closer look at the photograph above.

This isn't a showroom display or manufacturer room-set. It is an actual Shutters For You installation in a customer's home.

Despite the width of the glazed area, the shutters don't overwhelm the room.

The slim vertical lines of the panels complement the proportions of the doors, while the full-height design gives the entire opening a smart, consistent appearance.

And look at how much daylight is still entering the room.

That's an important point.

Having shutters doesn't mean choosing between privacy and natural light.

Control the light rather than simply blocking it

One of the biggest advantages of plantation shutters is the adjustable louvre.

Close a curtain and the light is largely blocked.

With shutters, you can alter the angle of the louvres instead.

That means you can reduce direct sunlight or screen the room from outside while still allowing daylight through the window.

It can be especially useful across large glazed doors where sunlight can otherwise create considerable glare.

In this installation, the louvres have been angled to provide privacy while the garden and daylight are still visible through the shutters.

What happens in the evening?

Large areas of glass look fantastic during the daytime.

They can feel rather different once it gets dark.

When the room is illuminated and outside is dark, patio doors can leave a living or dining area feeling surprisingly exposed.

Plantation shutters give you the ability to simply adjust or close the louvres when you want greater privacy.

During the daytime, open them again and enjoy the light.

It is this flexibility that makes shutters particularly practical in busy living spaces.

Full-height shutters create a particularly neat finish

The shutters shown here are full height, extending from the top to the bottom of the opening.

For wide glazed areas, this can create a very clean architectural appearance.

Rather than introducing lots of fabric around a large window, the shutters become part of the structure of the room.

That can work particularly well in modern kitchens, dining rooms, extensions and open-plan family spaces.

Will shutters work on my bifold doors?

Possibly — but every installation is different.

Before recommending shutters for bifold doors or another large opening, we need to consider things such as:

How the doors open Where the handles are positioned The available space around the opening How wide the glazed area is Where shutter panels can sit when opened How you normally use the doors

Sometimes shutters will be an excellent solution.

Sometimes another made-to-measure window treatment may work better.

That's why a home consultation is so useful.

Rather than choosing a product from a photograph online, you can discuss how you actually use the room and what you want the shutters to achieve.
